Directing 101: Basic Film Directing

This class aims to give the students the basic knowledge needed in directing films. It is wished that by the end of the class, the participants will understand the diverse roles of a director to make sure that his/her vision for the film will be realized.

  • What does a director do?
    • Director’s Vision
    • Film Language
  • Pre-Production
    • The Script
    • Storyboarding
    • Planning
  • Production
    • Dealing with the Crew
    • Dealing with Collaborators (i.e. Actors and Generals)
  • Post Production
    • Montage
    • Sound Design
  • Scene Analysis: Analyse movie scenes:
    • Different ways to tell a story.
    • Director’s Intention
    • Composition, Framing, lighting, production design and acting
Practical exercise:

The class will break into groups of 3, they will plan shoot and edit a scene in front of everyone.They will present the edited scene in class. The scene that they have to shoot comprises of one action line.

Purpose: Practical application of the film language. Working with the crew. Working under time pressure.
